Rebecca Bradley

Becky’s Honours project is based on the building of 53 Degrees Preston, which throughout the project she has gathered research, developed, created ideas, and produced detailed design to eventually come up with the final concept which is to change/produce a new use of the building, thus being first floor ‘Ice Rink’, second floor ‘Chill room’. Her project is aimed at students and the idea was to come up with something that Preston doesn’t have and which students would really appreciate, whilst being a place that the general public could also have entry to. Becky came up with the theme of ‘night and day’ with an ‘Ice themed’ style, after looking at the history and previous uses of the area. She also took into consideration the darkness of the building and how important the lighting has been for the building at night. The title for the project is ‘Minus 53 Degrees’ which she thought to be appropriate whilst not taking away too much of the previous name and the history of the building.

‘House of Hacking’ is an electrical upcycling center open to the public that gives the opportunity to redesign recycled electrical goods. The building now functions as an industrial building with an input of recycled electrics, the process of making and an outcome in gallery space and shop of re designed electrics. Yet these functions have been designed in an expressive and theatrical way, linking to the building’s historic roots of a cinema.

Transizione Italiana

Transforming an Italian restaurant into a chic, rustic, industrial Delicatessen over two floors. Sourcing local produce. Creating freshly made food everyday from jarred food to having their own curing sheds to make Parma Ham.

The chosen building already has a rustic look, individual rooms, low ceilings, original wooden beams and uneven walls. The design concept is looking at authentic Italian Deli’s with a modern twist, looking to expose the walls back to their original form, showing beautiful random stone masonry, giving out a homely/rustic feel by bringing the outside in. A viewing area will be located in the main deli area so that customers can see the fresh produce being made.

Eunice Flageul

Having been greatly inspired by the suffragettes Eunice’s project aims to deliver a scheme which provides a sanctuary for women of domestic abuse backgrounds, encouraging them to feel liberated as well help regain trust and confidence, with a strong emphasis on socialising and communication. Through incorporating the use of digital technology, the centre not only a microcosm in itself, inspired by nature and the habitats of colonial insects; bees, wasps etc. but also provides a network of help through various media to women who may not otherwise be able to visit the sanctuary.

Emma Goff

Emma’s Honours project is a celebration of locally sourced, rural produce. The site is a large Victorian building on the main street of her home town. After researching relevant material and developing imaginative ideas, the final concept is to create a deli and restaurant which will offer an exciting dining and ‘try before you buy’ experience. The restaurant will only be supplied by local farms from the surrounding Yorkshire Dales. Split over three levels, the concept will be linked via a decorative lift. Resembling both the appearance and function of a spine, it will connect/support the building programme.

Paul Harrison

Paul’s Honours Project is based at the site of St Pau’s Church, which is currently used as Rock FM Radio station, being inspired by sound and sound waves, Paul decided to explore this and use this concept in his work. Elaborating on Sound Waves and structures, he decided to create a space where people would experience a space completely silent and comfortable. Incorporating sound proof walls into seating structures for complete relaxation.

Yew Tree Farm is the existing site that she has chosen. It is an old farm that was built in 1903. The idea that she has chosen to bring back life to this old farm is an exotic wildflower reserve. All the original brick structure will be kept but the biggest building will have a glass structure put inside so it will be like a massive green house. The whole part of this design is educating children about the world around them and it’s not just about plants it’s about wildlife too.

Melanie McDermott

Melanie’s site is Manchester’s craft and design centre. Taking inspiration from thebuildings location (the Northern Quarter) and its history Melanie has chosen the theme of movement to add to the building’s interior. Using this theme she has come up with the concept of creating a dress agency which then transforms into a cinema in the evening. The upper floor of the building is a bar and food area throughout the day and evening. The idea of a dress agency and cinema is to create a diverse interior which will bring all types of people to the building creating a centre for Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

Freya Morgan

Freya's honours project is based on creating a community art and workshop centre focusing on urban art, influenced by the buildings surrounding area and the graffiti festival that takes place nearby. The central structure is inspired by the shape of a paint blob, which will be created from a geometric framework where canvases can be hung. The canvases create a series of layers, building an ongoing piece of artwork to be constantly added to. This will not only create a sense of community which the area lacks, but will educate and inspire people to get involved and be more creative.

Kyriaki Papadopoulou

Kyriaki’s sight is The Bus Station in Preston. An exceptionalexample of the Brutalism movement. The main characteristic of Brutalism is concrete, an element of the Bust Station and that was her inspiration to name her project “Concrete Jungle”. As the station was about to be demolished and a Youth Center was going to take place, Kyriaki decided to continue with the Youth Center idea for her own project.  A center dedicated to young people who have as a hobby the extreme adrenaline. A place that includes climbing walls and ramps for skateboarding, roller-skating and BMX ( Bicycle Motorcross), so they will not be exposed in danger on the streets.

Leanne Parkin

Number 3 Ribblesdale Place was once owned by the Horrocks family, a

prestigious cotton manufacturing family from 1842 to at least 1911. The

Horrockses were a key role in the industrialization of Preston, funding the

town and putting it on the map. The house is now being considered to be

used as a small gallery and café dedicated to the Horrockses and all the

family did for the status of Preston. Bridging out onto Avenham Park the

gallery will boom in business and will educate people on their local history in

an ideal location.

Rosie Peploe

Like an oyster with a grain of sand, this scheme will take an abandoned landmark and morph it into a significant space at the core of the community. A building that will enrich the area and invite people to come together and occupy

the space as one, with wildlife, environment, economy and positive healthy living at the forefront of the design. The scheme will apply responsive design and technology to the building to translate a language between the surrounding environment and the occupants within.

Sleha Sange

The project is based around the idea of a community theatre, allowing people of the community; older and youngsters to engage with art, performance and entertainment. A place, venue and environment bringing people together from different areas, schools and local colleges around town. A chance to interact with locals and perform shows and plays in the surrounding theatre.

Edyta Stankowska

The final project is about binding post and modern architecture with an abstract style that we can find in contemporary art.  Edyta’s project is related to style of dancing steps; in which she  would want people to feel comfortable and feel the sensation of classic ballroom dance. Currently winter garden is undeveloped therefore the final project is supposed to inspire people to follow flavours of food as if they would follow steps of dance.
